If you remember, some weeks back we had published an article stating our reasons why FaceTime over cellular was not really a good idea. Seems like the feeling was common, and various carriers have responded to the situation after many iPhone users saw a warning message on their devices when they tried to use FaceTime over their AT&T cellular connection. The warning message indicating that FaceTime over cellular would mean an additional cost for AT&T customers, was recently taken into account by AT&T itself and they have come up with a solution.
AT&T recently proposed that the iOS 6 feature would require the going-to-be-launched shared data plans from them, and won’t really work on their legacy data plans. i.e, the FaceTime over cellular feature would be only available to AT&T customers subscribed to their shared data plans, expected to be launched next month. This also means that unlimited data plans won’t do no good to you, if you wish to use FaceTime over cellular feature from AT&T.
MaRumors spotted AT&T stating the following:
“AT&T will offer FaceTime over Cellular as an added benefit of our new Mobile Share data plans, which were created to meet customers’ growing data needs at a great value. With Mobile Share, the more data you use, the more you save. FaceTime will continue to be available over Wi-Fi for all our customers.”
For the time being, there is no luck for AT&T customers using other data plans at the moment, while AT&T says that most of their customers would be on shared data plans by the end of this year. Further, once we see iOS 6 in action, we can expect tweaks, hacks and apps coming from the jailbreak community allowing FaceTime over all cellular networks and plans. That’s a thing of future as of now. AT&T is not the only one changing their plans for iPhone, recently Sprint has released a press notice stating that it won’t be charging additionally for the FaceTime over cellular feature on iOS 6, so it will let customers use the unlimited data plan for a while.
We are excited to see iOS 6 in action. Let us know your views via the comments section below. For more, keep subscribed.
